Yuga Labs Launches 2nd Trip Otherside Metaverse Experience
Yuga Labs launches its second trip for its Otherside universe today as a new metaverse experience.
According to Herman Narula, CEO of Improbable, the project’s tech partner, the business launched the experience with thousands of concurrent users interacting in real-time. Yuga Labs is a network of interconnected virtual worlds, like the one in the books Snow Crash and Ready Player One, in which the challengers attempt to build an experience in the metaverse.
The Second Trip starts from the First Trip from last summer when Yuga Labs and Improbable used software from Cambridge, England-based Improbable, which has been working with tech to create expansive gaming worlds for years, to merge 4,500 people into the same real-time 3D world with 3D audio.
For the Bored Ape Yacht Club, one of the wonders of the recent NFT boom, Yuga Labs invited owners of Otherdeed or anyone who had purchased its non-fungible tokens (NFTs). The names of the space-traveling avatars used to explore the beauty of the virtual world of Otherside were Voyagers, and owners of a dozen initiatives were able to put their PFP photos onto their screen-like faces.
Yuga Labs has the potential to become a strong metaverse contender and has a lot more capacity than the last time. Yuga Labs secured $450 million in March 2022 and sold 55,000 Otherdeed NFTs for virtual land ownership. It helped the company to secure around $320 million in primary sales.
More than 500,000 ETH, or more than $800 million, in secondary sales have been produced by the Otherdeed NFTs overall. An average Otherdeed NFT is valued at $2,920.
The Second Trip Experience
I joined thousands of other players in the Infinity Space virtual world, where Improbable evaluates the number of gamers it could accommodate. When more and more individuals joined, it became a wild crowd of avatars, all sprinting or jumping onto platforms to launch themselves into space. Until “Curtis” arrived, I sat on top of a floating colored ring in the center.
This time, Yuga Labs and Improbable displayed a variety of landscapes and art styles, characters with personalized avatars, guest passes, scale and density, and new game mechanisms.
Narula said: “This is the first stage in a series of new reveals. The way we create content is really different from what other people are doing. It’s an improved version. It’s a large number of people in different environments.”
In the form of a Bored Ape, Curtis was an enormous avatar who entertained the crowd by walking around for some time. The gamers were then drawn into a new realm when he asked them all to enter a portal. The group would be split into four groups, each led by an influencer who would serve as the team captain. These influencers were Brycent, Jimmy Wong, Champ Medici, and Lowbellie.
In our previous trip, players were dropped into a location known as the Biogenic Swamp, where they faced off against massive Kodas from the outside world. This time, we entered a green environment and descended a massive slide while continuously attempting to collect some gold pieces known as “magic blobs.” A gateway with huge toads was at the bottom of the slide. The toads would employ the magic blobs that our team dropped off with them to blow a hole in a new gateway. Each team competed with the other. Before I had to empty them into a toad, I could carry about 35 blobs at once. Millions of blobs were gathered by the teams, which was indicative of the size of the experience.
We then arrived in the universe with a huge blue pyramid. Again, thousands of Travelers were present. Three Giant Toad platforms were present, with the center platform blasting the pyramid to reach the next portal and the side platforms blasting the other opposing teams in an effort to prevent them from scoring.
Meanwhile, we had to gather magic blogs again after sliding down. I wasted time trying to climb back up to the correct location because I kept missing the aerial platforms. Therefore, there was some skill required. We were going to lose if everyone was as terrible as I was. I moved quickly, aiming to get as many as I could while avoiding missing jumps in the environment. We once again lost, but the teleporter opened, allowing us to fly to the pyramid and be transported once more.
Wrap-up
A shared experience where you may be amazed at the sheer number of people present, it was almost more like a virtual festival. We moved quickly across the space while performing repetitive work. It was an approachable game where anyone could participate, similar to a Subway Surfers experience in an open environment.
Yet it was a really remarkable technical accomplishment that demonstrates the kinds of experiences we can expect when the metaverse finally arrives.
