David Bowie’s Blockbuster Let’s Dance is Set to be Released as Music NFT in Collaboration with Gala Music
A renowned Web3 company, Gala Music, is winning hearts with the decision to partner with music producers for the release of David Bowie’s biggest hit Let’s Dance as NFT.
A major sensation in the rock music genre Bowie produced a treasure of music that combines truth and imagination and still speaks with the world today. He released a total of 27 studio albums throughout his career. Aside from his role as a musician, he engaged in other types of artistic expression, such as drawing, sculpting, and songwriting.
David Bowie widely regarded as one of the most important musicians of the twentieth century created a prolific library of 27 studio albums, 11 live albums, 4 soundtracks, and 128 singles during his lifetime. But it appears that the late singer-songwriter, who died in 2016, still has one track left to perform.
Gala Music Join Forces with Music Producer
Gala Music, a subsidiary of Web3 startup Gala Games, announced a collaboration with music producer Larry Dvoskin and publisher Warner-Chappell Music on Thursday to unleash a never-before-heard edition of David Bowie’s hit 1983 song “Let’s Dance” through a special edition of NFTs.
On April 14, four decades after the original version of “Let’s Dance,” Gala Music is going to release 3,003 NFTs featuring Bowie-inspired designs. Each NFT will provide the owner unique access to a previously unreleased version of the track, which Dvoskin co-produced with Bowie in 2002.
The NFTs will be marketed on a pay-what-you-wish model, with all initial earnings going to MusiCares, a nonprofit organization that offers health and humanitarian assistance to the music world.
In a statement, Dvoskin described the music as a “more dreamy, electronic” rendition of the mega-hit, which remains one of Bowie’s most popular songs ever recorded. The recording artist and songwriter has long desired for the track to be reworked.
A Tribute to Bowie on Let’s Dance’s 40th Anniversary
With the 40th anniversary of “Let’s Dance” coming, Dvoskin approached Bowie’s estate in an effort to convince them to publish the song via NFTs.
Dvoskin said in a statement: “When I first talked with the executor of the Bowie Estate, he told me he initially planned to listen to my pitch about releasing this as an NFT and then politely pass. But when he pulled up the original 2002 email in which Bowie expressed his enthusiasm for doing the recording, that changed his mind. This was a creative endeavor David never got to see released during his lifetime. We are honoring his wish by releasing it now.”
The release that is scheduled for next week will not be the Bowie Estate’s first journey into the blockchain. In September, Bowie’s family unveiled “Bowie on the Blockchain,” a series of NFTs in collaboration with the OpenSea platform. That collection, which was also auctioned to generate funds for charity, attracted strong criticism from Bowie fans, who saw the blockchain venture as incompatible with the late artist’s vision and ideals.
Warner Chappell Music, a division of Warner Music Group, currently owns Bowie’s complete music catalog, which was purchased early last year for $250 million. The music company established a partnership with Web3 media startup Defient last year to “unlock the power of Web3 for songwriters.”
Dvoskin’s contract with Warner Chappell Music is regarded as the label’s “first totally native NFT agreement” for a track that had never been launched in either digital or physical forms.
In the midst of a massive layoff, Warner Music Group announced last week that it would spare personnel participating in its growing slate of Web3 and AI activities, claiming “new digital initiatives as vital to the company’s future.”
The startup encountered controversy earlier this year when it confirmed upcoming movie projects with actors Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Mark Wahlberg — a declaration that appears to have increased the value of its native token GALA by 115% — only to delete the tweet and apologize for being “a little overcautious.” Gala noted that the production businesses of both stars are co-producing documentary film projects irrelevant to their own lifestyle or professions.
